Why DTS DVD player can not play DTS?

I think many people have ever met this problem: got a DTS DVD play on a DTS DVD player, but no sound come out. Indeed, the DVD player says it can play DTS (with DTS logo on the front), why there is no sound?

When a DVD player says it can play DTS (has the “DTS – Digital Out” label), it means it can read it from the DVD disc, and stream it across your “digital out” port (on the back of DVD player) to an AV receiver. So you need an AV receiver (which is plugged in to the DVD via an optical or coaxial digital cable) to take the DTS stream out, decode it and output it to your 5.1 speaker. That is to say only have a DVD player with DTS digital output is meaningless, you also need an AV receiver that’s capable of DTS. In a summary, you have to spend several to hundreds of dollars to get an AV receiver.

As mention to DTS DVD player, I have to say something about DTS audio codec. Both music and movie DVDs allow delivery of DTS audio tracks, but DTS was not existed in the original DVD specification (1997), so early DVD players did not recognize DTS audio tracks at all. The DVD specification was modified to allow optional inclusion of DTS audio tracks. The DVD title must carry one or more primary audio tracks in AC-3 or LPCM format (in Europe, MPEG-1 Layer 2 is also an allowed primary track format). The DTS audio track can be selected by the user. Many modern DVD players can decode DTS natively without problem. But some need an external decoder. That’s the reason why a DTS DVD player says it can play DTS, but no sound come out.

To get a set of Home Theater, you will spend a lot of money. In contrast, to get a DTS DVD player software will only cost you several dollars.  Why don’t you try to get a DTS DVD player software that can do everything for you.
